But Phair's flat vocal affect never changes, and co-producers Phair and Brad Wood slap on some bottom-heavy guitar and turn the whole thing into a swaggering classic-rock sing-along. "I want a boyfriend," Phair sang on "Fuck and Run", "I want all that stupid old shit like letters and sodas." The song takes Phair from the immediate regret that follows a one-night stand to some bigger, more intense feelings. Every song felt like an intense, revealing late-night conversation with a friend- a funny, erudite, drama-addicted, and very close friend. But what gave the album its staying power was its relatable directness. ![]() When Exile in Guyville arrived in 1993, it came equipped with plenty of attention-grabbing story pegs: the oft-quoted "blowjob queen" line, the ingenious low-tech production flourishes, the oblique and possibly mythical Rolling Stones references.
